Welcoming the Stranger: Preparing for Refugee Shabbat

Discover the Torah behind this year’s Refugee Shabbat (March 13–16), grounding today’s immigration realities in Jewish tradition: a people shaped by migration and commanded to care for the ger–the stranger among us. Join us for a panel that will offer Torah and resources for your community’s Refugee Shabbat, and explore how the immigration crisis is impacting our Conservative/Masorti community. 

Featured Panelists: 

Rabbi Sarah Bassin (HIAS) serves as the Rabbi in Residence for HIAS where she helps connect clergy and communities to the work of aiding and advocating for refugees and asylum seekers.

Rafi Forbush is the founder and Executive Director of the Multiracial Jewish Alliance of Minnesota, which seeks to support and advocate for the state’s multiracial Jewish community. As an active member of the Minneapolis Jewish community, he works to raise awareness for issues related to the intersections of race and religion through his work as a public speaker and educator.

Rachel Galanter is a program coordinator for El Futuro, a community-based organization in Durham, North Carolina, which works to provide culturally-sensitive mental health services to Spanish-speaking immigrants. She brings over 25 years of experience of supporting children, young adults, and families to this important work in her community.

Rabbi Charles Arian has served as Rabbi for Kehilat Shalom in Gaithersburg, Maryland since 2012, and has helped establish a warm, welcoming, and inclusive community for people of all different Jewish backgrounds. Recently, he has volunteered his time to accompany immigrants to their ICE appointments and court hearings in hopes of providing a stabilizing presence during an incredibly anxious time.
