Eighth Night: For the Jewish Light that Illuminates the World

By Rabbi Robert Scheinberg, United Synagogue of Hoboken, Hoboken, NJ

During this year's observance of Hanukkah, we have lit so many candles.
So many times we saw the flame jump from candle to candle.
So many times we saw the Shamash share its flame so willingly, even eagerly.
God, in Your Torah You are described as adonai elohecha esh ochlah hi, "Adonai Your God is consuming fire," [Deut. 4:24]
Perhaps because, like the Shamash, You have an infinite capacity to pass on the flame, to inspire, and to help others to achieve their purpose.
May the memory of all the candles I have lit during this holiday
inspire me to serve as a Shamash to those around me,
giving generously, giving others the spark they need to fulfill their potential,
and helping to illuminate the world with Your light of justice and freedom, fulfillment and peace!
