Publications Manager (Part-time)

The Rabbinical Assembly, the international membership organization of Conservative rabbis, is hiring a part-time Publications Manager to play an essential role in a core mission of the Rabbinical Assembly – the distribution of our message and media to Jewish communities across the globe. With nearly 100,000 books sold every year and tens of thousands of individuals served through electronic media we are seeking a reliable and detail-focused administrator who can make responsible and time sensitive decisions that support our staff and mission.

The Publications Manager works to support the Director of Publications and is the first line point of contact at the RA for customer support, printing, inventory management, and sales. The Publications Manager also assists with invoicing, accounts payable and scheduling for the Director. This work requires a proactive and analytical approach, ensuring RA Publications remains efficient, and responsive to customer needs. 

Key Responsibilities

Inventory & Distribution Management

  • Maintain established systems of complete and accurate product records, including publication details, content information, and sales data.
  • Track and document all print and reprint activity, including vendor, costs, materials, and timelines.
  • Monitor inventory levels, source competitive bids from multiple vendors, and initiate reprints.
  • Liaise with warehouse staff to ensure inventory accuracy, product integrity, and efficient distribution.

Sales & Business Development

  • Identify and pursue new revenue opportunities, including digital products, partnerships within the Movement (e.g., Exploring Judaism Mini-Shop), and targeted marketing efforts.
  • Maintain, and when necessary, establish store policies that balance business interests with good will, ensuring strong relationships with individual customers, institutions, and retail partners. 
  • Negotiate sales terms, contracts, and discount pricing with retailer partners. 
  • Manage discount programs for RA Members, CA Members, and Movement-affiliated institutions.
  • Support in-person sales at conferences and events as needed.
  • Ensure compliance with copyright policies.
  • Develop and implement innovative strategies to increase sales, leveraging new platforms, partnerships, and tools

Customer Support

  • Provide exceptional customer service via chat, phone, and email, ensuring timely and effective responses.
  • Oversee customer support provided by warehouse representatives and address any service issues.
  • Offer need-based discounted rates when appropriate to support accessibility and engagement.
  • Distribute and maintain digital publications on a case-by-case basis to meet accessibility needs and address special circumstances as they arise.

Market & Sales Analysis

  • Collect and analyze historical and real-time sales data to identify trends and inform business decisions.
  • Monitor sales and search trends to optimize product offerings and improve sales performance.
  • Use data insights to forecast demand and align production needs accordingly.

Administrative Responsibilities

  • Scheduling for and note-taking at staff and committee meetings
  • Preparing weekly invoices for approval by the director and transmission to accounts payable

Requirements and skills

  • Ideal candidates are familiar with Shopify and have exceptional skills in designing and maintaining spreadsheets
  • An analytical mind with problem-solving skills
  • Excellent organizational and unitasking skills
  • Familiarity with basic financial management principles, invoicing, expense tracking, etc
  • BS/BA in business administration or related field OR equivalent experience
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Excellent relationship management skills, with a focus on client & customer satisfaction                                                                      
  • Detail-oriented, accurate, organized
  • Experience with Asana is a plus
  • Experience using Zoom in administrator role, Microsoft Office, Excel and Outlook in particular, Google Drive, Adobe Acrobat, CiviCRM

This part-time position is 24 hours per week, and comes with a salary range of $36,000-$41,000. This position is not eligible for benefits.

Location: Remote or hybrid for someone in the New York area. Business hours are based in the Eastern time zone - with work hours between 9-5 Eastern.

The Rabbinical Assembly, first established in 1901 by graduates of the rabbinical school of the Jewish Theological Seminary, is the international association of Conservative/Masorti rabbis. Today its ranks include rabbis ordained at the seminaries of the Conservative/Masorti movement as well as rabbis of other accredited rabbinical schools who accept the tenets of Conservative Judaism. Its nearly 1,600 members serve as congregational rabbis, educators, military and hospital chaplains, professors of Judaica, and officers of communal service organizations throughout the world. While the majority of the men and women of the Assembly serve in the United States and Canada, more than ten percent of its rabbis serve in Israel and many of its rabbis serve in Latin America, in the countries of Europe, Australia and South Africa.
