The task of a search committee seeking a rabbi for a synagogue, for the kehillah kedoshah may appear to be secular or mundane. But understanding that we are a sacred community reminds us that the task before us has as its ultimate purpose securing a religious leader to guide the membership on the path to becoming and enduring as a sacred community. As it says in Genesis 28:16: “Surely, the Lord is present in this place, and I did not know it.” We hope that the rabbinic engagement process of the Joint Placement Commission (JPC) of the Conservative Movement, is for you to discover Divine presence in your search process.

By agreeing to serve on a rabbinic search committee, you are doing God’s work. You are embarking on a challenging process which will hopefully bring great benefit to your congregational community. This process will also provide a source of great satisfaction to your search committee. The Joint Placement Commission and the Rabbinical Assembly are here to guide you in making this process a source of growth for your congregation. Conservative Judaism is a unique religious path that sees mitzvot as dynamic and Jewish practice as unfolding. Conservative Rabbis are trained and experienced in helping congregations to grapple with the tasks of finding sacred meaning in Jewish Tradition while engaging fully in a changing world. Each congregational situation is unique, but the Rabbinical Assembly, through years of experience working with Conservative congregations, will guide you productively through this process. The work we begin here with your rabbinic search will continue as your congregation and your newly installed rabbi grow together.

We look forward to helping you find the right rabbi for your congregation.
