Resolution on the Israeli Peace Process

WHEREAS the Rabbinical Assembly, whose members serve as rabbis in Israel and the Diaspora, is an affiliate of the worldwide Masorti/Conservative movement, which supports the goals of Zionism as an integral facet of its commitment to the welfare of the Jewish people and Jewish culture;

WHEREAS the people and the government of the State of Israel, despite acts of terror perpetrated over many years against Israel’s residents, civilians as well as soldiers, and against its citizens elsewhere in the world, have continued to pursue a strategic policy of seeking accommodation with Israel’s Palestinian neighbors even while responding tactically with measured force; and

WHEREAS in recent months steps have been taken both by the Government of Israel and by the Palestinian Authority, with the support of friendly governments of other nations, to attempt to bring about a reduction of violent conflict between them and even a cessation of such violence.

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Rabbinical Assembly express its solidarity with the citizens of Israel as their democratically elected government makes painful, and even controversial, compromises in seeking to provide for their long-term security;

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Rabbinical Assembly call upon all of Israel’s citizens to continue to exercise restraint and patience in the face of adversity, and repudiate those who oppose the decisions of the duly elected Israeli government in ways that are disrespectful to the law, and to the integrity of the Israel Defense Forces.

Passed by the Rabbinical Assembly Plenum, March, 2005
