You are warmly invited to join us for a series of online study sessions on the history, politics, and art surrounding the Western Wall and the Temple.

הכותל המערבי הוא אחד המקומות הטעונים והמשמעותיים ביותר בזהות היהודית והישראלית בת זמננו. כיצד הפך מקום זה לקדוש? מה עבר עליו מאז מלחמת ששת הימים? ומה עומד על הפרק כיום, כשהוא ניצב במרכזה של מחלוקת מתמשכת בין זרמים ביהדות, בין דת למדינה, ובין נשים לגברים

בסדרה בת שלושה מפגשים נעקוב אחר תולדות הכותל מימי קדם ועד ימינו, ונבחן כיצד עיצבו אותו הדורות – מבחינה דתית, פוליטית וחברתית

מפגש 1: מתי הפך הכותל למקום קדוש? עלייה לרגל לירושלים לאורך הדורות נעקוב אחר התהליך שבו הפכה ירושלים לעיר קדושה בתקופת בית ראשון ושני, ונבחן את מעמד האתר לאחר חורבן הבית השני. 📅 יום שלישי, 13.10.2026

מפגש 2: הכותל המערבי אחרי מלחמת ששת הימים השינוי הפיזי והאדריכלי של הרחבה, המתח בין יהדות לזהות לאומית ישראלית, החפירות הארכיאולוגיות, סוגיית הפרדת המינים בתפילה, והיחס בין הכותל להר הבית. 📅 יום שלישי, 20.10.2026

מפגש 3: עתידו של הכותל – בין יהדות לזהות ישראלית דיון בסוגיות בנות זמננו: רחבת התפילה השוויונית, מעמדם של מקומות קדושים במדינת ישראל, הפרדת המינים, וארכיאולוגיה. 📅 יום שלישי, 3.11.2026

מפגש 1: בית המקדש, שהיה ויהיה, באמנות היהודית
במשך כאלפיים שנה ציירו היהודים מקדש שמעולם לא ראו במו עיניהם. השיעור בוחן כיצד באו לידי ביטוי כלי המקדש בזהב ובכסף בכתבי היד הספרדיים, ירושלים הבנויה מחדש בסיום ההגדות האשכנזיות, ואימוץ כיפת הסלע כתמונה המקובלת של בית המקדש עצמו.

מפגש 2: בית המקדש, שהיה ויהיה, באמנות הנוצרית
השיעור פותח בשאלה מדוע במרבית ציורי הרנסאנס נושא בית המקדש בירושלים את כיפתה המובהקת של כיפת הסלע, ועוקב אחר תמונה זו באמנות הרנסאנס הצפוני והדרומי כדי לחשוף כיצד תיאורי המקדש הנוצריים שימשו גם כטענת בעלות תיאולוגית על ירושלים.

Part 1: The Jewish Controversy Over the Western Wall.

A three-part online lecture series | Led by Prof. Doron Bar

The Western Wall is one of the most charged and meaningful sites in contemporary Jewish and Israeli identity. How did this place become sacred? What has it undergone since the Six-Day War? And what is at stake today, as it stands at the center of an ongoing conflict between religious streams, between religion and state, and between women and men?

Across three sessions, we will trace the history of the Western Wall from antiquity to the present, examining how it has been shaped religiously, politically, and socially through the generations.

Lecture 1: When Did the Western Wall Become a Sacred Site? Jewish Pilgrimage to Jerusalem Throughout History Tracing the process by which Jerusalem became a sacred city during the First and Second Temple periods, and examining the status of the site after the destruction of the Second Temple in 70 CE. 📅 Tuesday, October 13, 2026

Lecture 2: The Western Wall After the Six-Day War The physical and architectural transformation of the plaza, the tension between Judaism and Israeli national identity, archaeological excavations, the issue of gender separation in prayer, and the relationship between the Western Wall and the Temple Mount. 📅 Tuesday, October 20, 2026

Lecture 3: The Future of the Western Wall: Between Judaism and Israeli Identity A discussion of contemporary issues: the Egalitarian Prayer Plaza, the role of holy places in the State of Israel, gender segregation, and archaeology. 📅 Tuesday, November 3, 2026

B. The Temple in Jewish and Christian Art

Lecture 1: The Once and Future Temple in Jewish Art For nearly two thousand years, Jews pictured a Temple none of them had ever seen. This class traces how that memory took shape — from the gold and silver Temple implements in medieval Spanish Bibles, to the rebuilt Jerusalem awaited at the close of Ashkenazi haggadot, to the striking adoption of the Dome of the Rock as the standard image of the Temple itself.

Lecture 2: The Once and Future Temple in Christian Art This class opens with a puzzle: why does the Temple of Jerusalem so often wear the unmistakable dome of the Dome of the Rock in Renaissance painting? Tracing that image through the Northern and Southern Renaissance, it reveals how Christian depictions of the Temple doubled as theological claims to Jerusalem itself.
