Resolution on the Labeling of Food Containing Genetically Modified Organisms

Whereas Jewish tradition has the tradition of sanctifying ourselves through food with blessings, teachings and the scrupulous observance of kashrut and

Whereas the thrust of rabbinic teachings about kashrut and gneyvat da’at (deception) focuses on the central recognition that consumers have the right to thorough and accurate information about the products they feed their families and

Whereas more than 60 countries around the world have regulations concerning the labeling of foods produced using genetic engineering and

Whereas it is the responsibility of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to ensure that genetically engineered food is safe to eat and

Whereas other federal agencies that regulate genetically engineered products, including crops and animals, have not yet enacted a comprehensive plan to adequately oversee and monitor genetically engineered products.

Therefore be it resolved that the Rabbinical Assembly supports mandatory labeling of all genetically engineered products sold in the United States and throughout the world and

Be it further resolved that the Rabbinical Assembly will educate its members so that they, in turn, can educate members of their communities to support efforts to require the labeling of products that contain genetically modified organisms.
