Registration for Interview Week 2020 in New York, NY

Welcome to Senior Interview Week! It is a great pleasure to present the graduating seniors of the Ziegler School of Rabbinic Studies and the Jewish Theological Seminary to you. Interview Week provides a professional atmosphere in which senior students and affiliated congregations and institutions can meet to enter into a special bond. Please accept our appreciation for your participation.

Over the years, we have found that synagogues aim to complete their search before Pesach. While the schedule of dates does support that goal, it is also important to know that it is not uncommon for a search to take longer. We tell you this to help you plan, but also to help alleviate some of the anxiety that might persist around timing.

Questionnaires and job descriptions must be uploaded, and Student Interview Week registration must be completed by Wednesday, January 22nd at 5 PM ET.

Interviews for congregations seeking to hire graduates from the rabbinical school of the Jewish Theological Seminary and the Ziegler School of Rabbinic Studies will take place Monday, February 10th at 9:00 AM through Thursday, February 13th at 1 PM (ET) at the Jewish Theological Seminary, 3080 Broadway New York, NY 10027. All interviews will take place regardless of weather conditions.

Interviews are scheduled to begin at 9 AM every day and are set to run 50 minutes each, with a 10 minute break in between sessions. Search committees will receive an email no later than Thursday, January 30th with a proposed schedule for their interviews. Resumes of the interested candidates will be available starting on Monday, January 27th.

Unconscious Bias and Diversity Training

The Joint Placement Commission of the RA, USCJ, Ziegler and JTS is committed to fair and equitable hiring processes and pay scales for all rabbis. We are pleased to offer two different sessions for search committee members designed to help you and your community overcome implicit bias and/or unintended gender imbalance in the hiring process. These trainings build on trainings that have been done for students who will be interviewing with you and are part of a holistic effort to advance the Conservative Movement's work on gender equity.

We ask that you have at least one member of your search committee participate in each session and welcome participation from as many of your search committee members as can join us.

Additionally, we'd be delighted to speak with you individually about how you think about these issues in your community. Thank you for your partnership. We look forward to learning and training together as we strengthen our sacred Jewish communities for the present and future.

December 16 – Overcoming Implicit Bias

Our Jewish tradition calls upon us to see each person as a unique manifestation of God. Still, it can be hard to avoid holding implicit biases - assumptions, stereotypes, and unintentional actions we make toward others (positive or negative) based on identity labels like race, religion, age, gender, sexual orientation, or ability. In a rabbinic search, this can be detrimental to finding the best candidate fit for your community. In this session, we will identify the biases people sometimes hold as they evaluate and interview rabbis, explore ways to overcome them, and provide tools for you to use in your own community to raise awareness and overcome unintended biases toward candidates.

January 27 - Understanding Why and How to Create a Safe and Healthy Workplace Which Translates into a Sacred Community for All

Join expert Fran Sepler of Sepler & Associates for a 90-minute training. Sepler has decades of experience helping public and private organizations throughout the country create comprehensive initiatives to understand, prevent, identify, investigate and remediate misconduct in the workplace. This training is made possible by funding from the Women’s Rabbinic Network and their grant from the Safety Respect Equity Coalition.
