Director of Continuing Education, Mentorship, and Rabbinic Career Development Position Description

The Director of Continuing Education, Mentorship, and Rabbinic Career Development helps achieve Our RA’s vision to look after the career advancement of Conservative/Masorti rabbis around the globe in all fields and through all stages of their rabbinate. This position can be based in Manhattan or work remotely.  The Director will:

  • Provide counsel in areas of spiritual direction, transition support, and workplace conflict for colleagues throughout the world and in all areas of the rabbinate.

  • Partner with lay leaders and institutional partners to develop and implement a comprehensive continuing education program in professional skills and Torah study.

  • Partner with Director of Career Services in providing support for rabbis making a change in career, for congregations in placement, and other organizations seeking rabbinic leadership.

Provide counsel in areas of spiritual direction, transition support, and workplace conflict for colleagues throughout the world and in all areas of the rabbinate:

  • Individual Counseling: Become the “go to” person on the staff for counseling and support in areas including: spiritual direction (mashgiah/ah ruhani/t), transition support, workplace conflict, and crisis management.  Supplement support to rabbis, and congregations during peak placement season. 

  • Volunteer Mentorship: Develop and implement volunteer mentorship and coaching programs across professional settings and for various points along the rabbinic career path, but especially at times of transition and for early-stage rabbinates.

  • Professional Coaching: Develop and maintain a set of recommended consultants (volunteer and professional) available to our rabbis for ongoing consulting work on various topics.

Partner with lay leaders and institutional partners to develop and implement a comprehensive continuing education program in professional skills and Torah study.

  • Torah Study: Develop in-house and partnership opportunities to help colleagues study Torah lishmah, as well as to stay current and fresh in scholarship needed for their rabbinate.  

  • Shared Torah: Develop ways for rabbis to share resources as they develop materials for teaching and preaching.

  • Professional Skills Development: Develop in-house and partnership opportunities to help colleagues develop professional skills (e.g. supervision, teaching and facilitation, administration), including certificates of participation, certifications, and degree programs.

Partner with the Director of the Career Services to provide support for rabbis making a change in career, for congregations in placement, and other organizations seeking rabbinic leadership.

  • Joint Placement Commission: Represent the interests of Rabbinical Assembly members on the JPC and partner with the Director of Career Services who serves as the primary staff person

  • Rabbinic Career Development Commission: Serve as lead staff member, using the committee to develop ideas, set priorities, and as the foundation for a network of volunteers to implement programs and projects.

Recommended Experiences and Skills

  • Rabbinic Ordination from Conservative/Masorti Seminary and/or equivalent

  • Well-developed outreach, communication, and interpersonal skills

  • High measure of emotional intelligence

  • Strong listening skills and pastoral presence

  • Significant experience leading a school, synagogue, communal agency, not-for-profit and/or for-profit organization

  • Supervision/mentoring and coaching/counseling experience

  • Experience developing professional development and/or Torah study opportunities

  • Strong passion for Conservative/Masorti Judaism’s principles, Torah, Jewish living and inspiration

  • Kind and approachable; Menschlichkeit

Compensation: $115,000 salary, plus excellent benefits including excellent health insurance (for rabbis benefits include 20% additional contribution to pension and option for parsonage)
